What is the Tama area?The beginning of a new trip to Tokyo
An experience of Tokyo outside of the 23 metropolitan wards will add color to your trip.

The 30 municipalities in Tokyo, excluding the 23 wards and the Izu and Ogasawara Islands. The Tama area is divided into four regions: north, south, east, and west. Among them, the western area is where you can experience natural beauty such as the greenery of the mountains, broad vast blue skies, and clear streams. In the southern part of the mountainous region of Tokyo is Mt. Takao, which boasts about 3 million climbers each year and has many hiking trails.

青梅

The Tamagawa River flows from east to west, extend your foot to Mt. Mitake, the sacred home of mountain worship.

Ome area

Ome City, located in the western part of Tama, features the Tamagawa River that flows from west to east, and more than 60% of its total area is covered by forests. Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park is located here, and Mt. Mitake, which is as famous as Mt. Takao, is easy to climb even for beginners. We also recommend visiting Musashi Mitake Shrine.

Okutama area

The town of Okutama-machi, located in the far northwest part of Tokyo, is entirely included in Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. The Tamagawa River flows through the center of the town from west to east. Two hours from the city center you can enjoy your leisure time in the great outdoors, engaging in anything from mountain sports such as cycling, trekking, and hiking to river sports such as canoeing.

Akigawa area

93% of the total area of Hinohara Village is forest, and most of the village is included in Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. A ridge with an altitude of 900m to 1000m runs east to west through the center of the village. Akiruno City was formed in 1995 through the merger of Akikawa City and Itsukaichi Town, with the Akikawa River flowing to the south and the Hiraigawa River flowing to the north. Akikawa-keikoku Valley, which stretches from Akiruno City to Hinohara Village is visited by many people throughout the four seasons.

Mt. Takao, visited by many people from home and abroad, with attractive hidden natural spots in the surroundings.

Takao/Hachioji area

Mt. Takao is less than an hour by train from Shinjuku and is visited by many people from Japan and abroad. With an altitude of only 599m hiking can be enjoyed there by anyone using cable cars and chair lifts. Hachioji City is the largest city in the Tama area with a population of about 580,000 people. Many natural spots can be found here such as the Musashi Imperial Mausoleum and Takao Komakino Garden in addition to Mt. Takao.
